T
his great blue heron takes a rest along the west shore of
the Indian River near Fort Pierce City Marina. In 2015, the
marina completed a unique storm protection project comprising
13 islands of various sizes that were built around the docks at the
city marina. Aimed at protection of the many boats docked there, the
islands were designed to serve a dual purpose by providing a juvenile
fish habitat. Mangroves were planted to help provide sanctuary for the
small fish. Birds and other marine life also are drawn to these islands.
