drawings — just gut instincts and intuitions. Without me realizing it,
Mother Nature steps in sometimes and affords me wonderful shapes
and outlines. This is how my ‘Sidewalk Series’ came about. Those
paintings were inspired by the cracks and texture of worn pavement.
This is not to say that you will see a sidewalk when you look at them,
but it is what inspired them. You never know what will inspire you and
then all of the sudden you’re surprised when it shows up on your
paper.’’
What do you want your audience to take away from your work: “A
sense of wonder. How did I do that? Why am I drawn to this painting?
An appreciation of texture, color and form. A sense of calm and happiness.”
Artists who have inspired you and how: “There are too many to list
but my two favorites are Wassily Kandinsky for his wonderful sense of
freedom and Joan Mitchell for her fearlessness.”
Favorite place to paint: “In my studio either here in Florida or in New
Jersey. I prefer to paint alone and in a quiet atmosphere. This way I can
connect with my inner self and just get lost in what I’m doing.”
Favorite subjects: “None. All things appeal to me in my own way and
then they reappear on my paper as I perceive them to be.”
Favorite things to do when not painting: Cooking, reading, golf.
