GOLF CLASSIC BENEFITS BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
A full field of golfers came out to St. James Golf Club
for the 13th Annual Golf Classic to benefit the Boys and
Girls Club of St. Lucie County. Longtime chair of the
tournament and founding board member of the Boys &
Girls Club Chuck Hill was honored with the renaming of
the tournament after him.
After perfect weather and great day of golf, 120 golfers
enjoyed a barbecue lunch and a tribute to Hill, who has
been an educator throughout his career. While he was
principal of Port St. Lucie Elementary School, Hill became
concerned that his young students were going home to
unsupervised houses. He brought the issue to then-Port
St. Lucie Mayor Bob Minsky, and the two men began the
process that ultimately led to the establishment of the
Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised in the
13 years that the club and the golf tournament have been
around, so without the tournament (and Chuck Hill) the
club would not have prospered as it has. The Boys & Girls
Club of St. Lucie County is a non-profit organization dedicated
to serving the youth of the community by providing a
safe place to learn and grow, as well as life enhancing programs
and character developing experiences.
TENDING TO CHILDREN
Don and Amy Kryak aren’t just co-founders of the
Never Leave a Child Unattended campaign. They are
parents themselves. They founded the public safety campaign
14 years ago, when Don, a captain with the Port St.
Lucie police, saw firsthand the tragedy of children left
unsupervised during one summer when three local children
drowned. The Port St. Lucie couple were quick to
recognize that the drownings were the direct result of
children not being supervised. Their message: there is no
substitution for supervision.
Although conceived in response to pool safety, Don and
Amy have extended their important message of supervision
to include malls, public restrooms, cars and homes.
The couple believe that with proper supervision most
tragic injuries like drownings and even child abductions
can be avoided.
Each year, the Kryaks kick off this public awareness
crusade with the overwhelming support of local media
and law enforcement agencies. The program has been
recognized nationally and is now available in English,
Spanish, Creole and Portuguese. For posters, flyers or
more info call Amy at 878-8878 or check out their website
