snowy egret Egretta thula is hunting alone in its perfect
habitat. Standing in shallow water, it’s hoping to spear its
prey, which may be a frog or small fish. Adult snowy egrets
are easy to recognize with an all white body, a black bill, black
legs and yellow feet. At one time, the plumes of the snowy egret
were in great demand as decorations for women’s hats. Now
protected in the United States by law, under the Migratory Bird
Treaty Act, this bird’s population has rebounded. A
