t’s been a long time coming, but construction on Fort Pierce’s $42 million
federal courthouse project is scheduled to begin this month. The project has
been in the planning stages for years, but the rising cost of construction and
security measures required after Sept. 11 terrorist attacks increased substantially
beyond initial estimates. Expected to take about three years to complete, the
courthouse will be built in the heart of downtown on four acres at the corner of
Orange Avenue and U.S. 1. The 100,000-square foot courthouse will include courtrooms,
