Canadians who lived there
during the winter. “At night,
they would come over and we
would play all kinds of card
games with them,” Forget
recalls. During World War II,
the cottages were rented
to servicemen.
The ties to Canada remained
strong and sisters Pierette and
Theresa moved back to Montreal
to live. The family would
often take the 5-day trip by
car to visit them, says Forget.
Brother John operated Forget’s
Television on Orange Avenue.
Forget married Joan
Hutchinson, who had moved
with her family from England
to Fort Pierce. Janine married
Roger Poitras, the long-time
clerk of the Circuit Court.
In November, four generations
of Forgets, along with
family friends, gathered to
mark 100 years in St. Lucie
County and their ancestor’s
decision to escape the cold and
find warmth in a place they
now call home.
