The “I Remember Fort Pierce When” Facebook site shares more memories
a young boy, he knew Harry Hill, the photographer who
documented much of Fort Pierce’s early days, and counted
among his friends noted artist A.E. “Beanie” Backus and
“Uncle Bill” Summerlin, joining them for breakfast for
close to 30 years.
His sharp recall and endless supply of photographs continue
to jolt the group’s memories.
Wilson was born in Vero Beach and grew up on 14th
Street in the heart of downtown Vero, but he has spent his
life in both cities, living in Vero and working in Fort Pierce.
Now, he lives in Fort Pierce and works in Vero.
Since he keeps track of both Facebook groups, he has
noticed a difference between the two.
“The Fort Pierce group seem much more close and they
keep their ranks close,” he says. “They still go to church to-
than photos. It also offers a place for old friends to reconnect.
“Growing Up in Fort Pierce” Facebook members even share events like
the Herman and Karen Summerlin Rebuild benefit in April 2012.
