Marjorie O’Quinn started square dancing in the mid-1970s and for years
danced with Sandy Shoes and Sunshine Strollers.
Singer sewing machine wrapped in a blanket. He said he had
bought it thinking his wife would learn to sew, but she didn’t.
They traded. I got the Singer sewing machine and he got a
used car.”
The sewing machine was pedal-operated rather than
electric, and Marjorie says she “pedaled a lot of miles on it,”
making nearly everything her family wore. Cotton fabric for
her husband’s sport shirts cost 19 cents a yard. Dress patterns
went for 10 or 15 cents.
“I sewed until my little girl went off to college, and then I
made dresses for her when she came home, like a red velvet
evening dress,” she said.
And always, Marjorie O’Quinn found ways to stay physically
active, even going outside to run around the house
when TV shows broke for commercials. Early in the morning,
she used to go to a nearby school track, walk a couple of
miles and be home by 7.
She still tries to get some exercise.
“I walk on my walker every chance I get, but it’s not
enough, not enough to do much good!”
