Our mission is to promote the arts in the community and perpetuate the artistic and humanitarian legacy of A.E. Backus. Why that’s important: Albert Ernest Backus (1906-1990) was a largely self-taught artist from Fort Pierce who created iconic images of the timeless beauty of the Florida landscape. Whether in the glades, the beaches, the rivers, the savannas, or the back country, his paintings capture a unique sense of place that is instantly recognizable and beloved. Praised and renowned as an exceptional artist in the regionalist tradition, he was also a mentor and advocate for countless people in his lifetime, and is remembered today both for his artistic accomplishments, his altruistic spirit, and in sharing the arts with his community.

Do you have immediate needs because of the coronavirus pandemic?:
What are they?:
We need your financial help today to survive and continue to provide creative programming tomorrow for adults, children, families, and students & teachers in our community. Now more than ever, the arts unify communities – strengthen the economy – drive tourism and revenue to local businesses – have social impact – improve individual well-being, and so much more. Please join us to restore and renew our purpose and our community.
How can people donate?:
You can make a secure online donation at www.BackusMuseum.org/donate
What kind of other specific help is needed?:
Truth is we don’t know – but when we know more about when we are able to reopen, we will need special assistance, like getting the kinds of supplies (hand-sanitizer etc.) necessary to welcome the public back.
