and was president of Riverside Bank when it folded in
April 2010 and was taken over by TD Bank, where she now
works as vice president of business development. “TD is a
little more structured,” she says. “I’m in my upward learning
curve.” Alley contemplates retiring in another five years. “I
love working,” she says. “I can’t figure out what I would do
at home.”

“The first time my bubble burst about Fort Pierce was in
the 1980s when Bo Powell was chief of police,” Alley says.
“We were having a discussion about the curfew that was in
place. I asked him why didn’t he pick up the kids and take
them home after curfew? He replied, ‘Pat, it’s because there is
no one at home for me to take them to.’ That is when I finally
admitted that my little town was changing.”
Being the oldest of seven children, Alley has never been
afraid of hard work. “I always had a little brother or sister
to watch after,” she says. When she was young, her family
built the house on Angle Road. “I’ll never forget us kids lugging
concrete blocks to the building site,” says Alley. “We all
worked together to build that house.” At age 12, she started
working at her father’s filling station and auto repair shop.
“He taught me how to change a tire and put oil in a car,” she
says, “anything to keep us busy. We stayed out of trouble
because we were always busy. I loved waiting on customers
and pumping gas.”
The expertise in customer service that Alley cultivated as
a child paid off when she entered the business world as an
adult. “It’s my philosophy not to treat people as you would
have them treat you, but even better,” she says. And she has
exemplified this philosophy throughout her career. “I got
my first banking job in 1965 at First National Bank in Fort
Pierce,” she says. “Later, I worked for First Federal, which became
Harbor Federal. It’s an ongoing joke that I trained Hal
Roberts,’’ referring to the former president of Harbor Federal.
After her husband retired, Alley decided to go back to
work full time. “I was working with Martha Sneed at Sun
