When conductor Stephen
Torick lifts his baton at the
Sunrise Theatre Dec. 16, a
cadre of musicians will be ready to begin the
Treasure Coast Symphony’s 2007-08 season. This
orchestra of volunteer performers has been around
for decades, first coming to life as the Indian River
Concert Orchestra, performing wherever there was
room for it.
For the initial four years after its 1984 incorporation
as the Treasure Coast Symphony, the orchestra
performed at the Fort Pierce Jai Alai fronton.
Richard Foster was the first in a long line of conductors,
followed by Marie Tuniska, Michael
Robers, Paul Truitt, John Enyart, Joseph Wise, Keith
Clark, John Nalenzy, Allen Rosenberg, William
Bertsch, Joseph Kreines, Michael Garasi, and now
Stephen Torick and and his wife, Kate Torick, who is assistant
conductor.
By 1988, the orchestra had been invited to become the
orchestra-in-residence at Indian River Community College,
and to give its performances at the theater on the campus, the
McAlpin Fine Arts Center. Orchestra members became stu-
