COUNTIES ALLOCATE FEDERAL FUNDS TO HELP RECOVER
FROM PANDEMIC AND SPUR ECONOMIC GROWTH
St. Lucie County plans on using part of its $63 million in ARPA allocations to prevent flooding issues in Lakewood
Park and the Orange Blossom Business Center shown here in Sept. 2017 after Hurricane Irma impacted the area.
The Treasure Coast’s road to economic
growth and recovery from the devastating
effects of the pandemic received a welcomed
boost with the allocation of funds from the
American Rescue Plan Act.
Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River county
governments have received the first installment
of their funds that will eventually total almost
$94 million. They had until May to devise
action plans to distribute the money, which
must be spent by the end of 2026.
The $1.9 trillion economic package, signed
into law by President Biden in March, is
intended to compensate the counties for
lost revenue and personnel costs incurred
since COVID-19 first reached the United
States in January 2020. It is intended to assist
with public health costs, negative economic
impacts, replacing public sector revenue
losses, giving pay supplements to essential
workers and investing in water, sewer or
broadband infrastructure projects.
The three county governments on the
Treasure Coast have received the first half of
their total allocations, which eventually will
amount to around a collective $94 million.
These funds are for use in unincorporated
counties and the numbers do not include
separate allocations to individual cities.
