In Indian River County, Vero Beach High offers majors in
web and digital design, environmental technology, as well as
visual and theater arts, culinary operations, foreign languages
and more.
Sebastian River High draws students who want to attend
its academies in medicine, environmental science, digital
design, the Advanced Academics and International
Baccalaureate academy, and several other programs.
Indian River also has four charter schools. Indian River
Charter High School is a non-traditional high school focusing
on character development, academic achievement, career
preparation, and cultural awareness. Class schedules resemble
those of a college, with the school open from 10 to 13
hours a day.
Martin County turned one of its early schools, in Jensen
Beach, into the Environmental Studies Center, where students
can gain first-hand knowledge of local marine life.
“The ESC even has its own alligator and loggerhead turtle,”
spokeswoman Cathy Brennan said.
As the Treasure Coast advances further and further toward
becoming the Research Coast, particularly in Port St. Lucie,
Treasure Coast schools aren’t standing still.
“We are reinventing everything,” Mike Lannon said.
