The Treasure Coast Youth Sailing Foundation uses classic
small boats to introduce children to sailing on the Indian River

Not even those blustery ladies of hurricane season
2004 could steer a determined group of
Treasure Coast sailors off course. Roy
Whitehead, then commodore of the Fort Pierce
Yacht Club, had made a presentation to the
Fort Pierce City Council before the storms, asking for permission
to use Jaycee Park as a base for a proposed sailing
camp for children in the area.
But it would be 2006 before fundraising for the organization
could get under way and it wasn’t until 2007 that the
first young sailor-to-be took the helm of a Sailing Foundation
sail boat. Planning is already in high gear for the second season
of the summer sailing camp for Treasure Coast students
8 to 13 years old, set for early June to early August.
Teaching sailing is the primary purpose of the foundation,
but there’s more to it than instructing children on how to
