of Florida that offered lacrosse as a
varsity sport so Sternberg got busy.
In addition to leading her young
team to three state championships,
Sternberg ran camps and clinics and
helped start up lacrosse club programs
throughout the state. Schools that
benefited from her early training and
assistance include Vero Beach High,
Sebastian River, St. Michael’s School
(now the Pine School in Hobe Sound)
and other school and club programs
from Melbourne to Fort Lauderdale.
Soon other lacrosse coaches stepped
up as areas on the Treasure Coast
began to build a lacrosse stronghold.
In fact, Vero Beach High’s coach
Shannon Dean has led his girls’ team
to three consecutive state championships,

helping to make Indian River
County a powerhouse of youth and
high school lacrosse. As Indian River
went to press, the team was competing
in the state semi-finals after
a judge reversed the Florida High
School Athletic Association’s decision
to prohibit the team from participating
in the playoffs because it had played
too many games out of state.
