Indian River County Composite Index Less Than National Average

Among the 255 urban areas participating
in the April 2019 Cost of Living Index
(COLI) survey, the after-tax cost for a
professional/managerial standard of living
ranged from more than twice the national
average in New York (Manhattan) to nearly
25 percent below the national average
in Harlingen, Texas. Indian River County’s
Composite Index measured 99.6, slightly
less than the national average of 100.0.
The Indian River County Chamber of
Commerce has conducted the Cost of
Living surveys since 1996 with assistance
from Chamber volunteers. The Vero Beach-
Sebastian area was one of ten Florida communities
to participate in the survey, and
the only community in our region to do so.
National results are published quarterly by
C2ER — The Council for Community and
Economic Research. The quarterly Cost of
Living Index is available by subscription.
The Index reflects regional differences in
the cost of consumer goods and services,
excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures,
for professional and managerial
households in the top income quintile
throughout the U.S. It is based on more
than 90,000 prices covering 60 different
items in six categories: housing, utilities,
grocery items, health care, transportation,
plus miscellaneous goods and services.
This recent survey reflects indexes ranging
from 242.5 in Manhattan, New York to a
low of 73.8 in Harlingen, Texas, which is
located 40 miles east of McAllen on the
Mexico border.
“This data is used by consultants when
they are conducting their due diligence in
the site selection process,” states Helene
Caseltine, Economic Development Director
for the Chamber. “It’s also helpful when
an individual is considering a relocation
from one city to another, especially in
terms of salary negotiations.”
Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital
welcomes internal medicine physician
Lori Posk, MD, FACP. Posk earned her
doctor of medicine from Michigan State
University and completed her internal
medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic
Foundation in Ohio. She is board certified
in internal medicine and clinical informatics.
Posk served as chief medical resident
at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation prior
to becoming medical director for MyChart
at Cleveland Clinic and medical director at
the Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery
Center. Her focus includes the personal
patient portal, practice efficiency and
improving chronic disease management.
Posk also treats conditions such as high
cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure,
Alzheimer’s disease and preventative medicine.
