‘‘ I especially like the lifesaving equipment on display at the
museum. It makes you realize how far things have advanced.
’’ ‘‘ When you visit the House of Refuge, you can almost imagine shipwrecked sailors
coming upon it and then living in the rustic accommodations until help arrives.

Tourists looking for an experience
to write home about will soon
navigate to House of Refuge at Gilbert’s
Bar. The last of 10 houses of
refuge for shipwrecked sailors built
by the U.S. Treasure Department in 1876, and
the only one still standing, the House of Refuge
is now on the National Register of Historic
Places, making it a natural for Best Historical
Place to Visit. Inside, you’ll see replicas of the
rooms as they were when the keeper lived
there in 1904. The rocks outside are an outcropping
of the Anastasia Formation, which
became known as Gilbert’s Bar.
