create a pipeline of skilled employees qualified for careers in
light technologies.
These specialized segments of physics and engineering
deal with areas such as fiber optics in telecommunications,
medical imaging, defense and homeland security, and consumer
electronics such as cell phones and high-definition
televisions.
Solar energy promises jobs in a still-evolving field, Massey
says. “This is an emerging sector and we feel that, over time,
there will be many jobs created in solar energy, for example in
construction of solar panels and in construction and maintenance,”
he says.
The local construction industry, beaten down by the
recession, will come back, Massey says, and when it does,
graduates trained in new energy-efficient construction will
be waiting.
Part of their training will include the use of a “snap-together”
house with modules that students can change as they
learn and experiment with energy-efficient materials and
methods of construction. They may even test materials for
local companies.
The building sustainability lab has a 20-foot-wide by 20-
foot-high garage-style door to allow modules of the house to
be taken outside, Cooper said.
