SEASON OF THE ARTS
PERFORMING ARTS
Those who miss the recreation
center should know
that the pool tables and
games were moved to the
center on 10th Street in Stuart
with no loss to city residents.
Originally built in 1943
to entertain servicemen and
women, the Federal Recreation
35
Building’s name was
changed to the Stuart Civic
Center and later to the Stuart
Youth Center. Before the
recent renovation it was the
Stuart Recreation Center.
Retired Stuart dentist Dale
Hipson was in the military
when he first entered the
building for a dance. “I could
hardly get a dance because
of all of the sailors from Fort
Pierce,” he says. “They were
aggressive.” He saw the
renovations at a recent book
signing. “What a change. I
didn’t recognize it. It was
a real shock to see it. They
spent a few dollars. It served
its purpose then and it serves
its purpose today. What a
great location.”
Ethel’s Lounge, named for Lyric board president Ethel Christin, has comfortable furniture for cocktail receptions.
With a capacity of 100 people, the room is also wired to show audio visual productions.
