Art treasures come to Treasure Coast
BY CATHERINE ENNS GRIGAS
Prints by modern masters such as Pablo Picasso
and Joan Miro, watercolors by the celebrated
American painter Andrew Wyeth and exhibitions
featuring some of the best artists working on the
Treasure Coast are in store for art lovers in the
coming months.
The Elliott Museum in Stuart will take a hiatus this season
while construction of the new, state-of-the-art educational
and exhibition facility, the New Elliott Museum, is under
way. Opening is scheduled for January 2013. In the meantime,
its affiliate, the historic House of Refuge at Gilbert’s Bar,
will be offering a number of art exhibits as well as a lecture
series that should appeal to Florida history buffs.
The Vero Beach Museum of Art has already begun its
season, currently exhibiting, “In the Tradition of Wyeth:
Contemporary Watercolor Masters,” a show based on two
recent acquisitions of Wyeth paintings. It features works by
notable contemporary artists such as Stephen Scott Young
and Ray Ellis, who have continued working in the watercolor
tradition.
Among its event highlights, in January, the A.E. Backus
Museum and Gallery will feature a traveling exhibition from
the Syracuse University’s art collection, “Modernist Prints
from 1900 to 1955,” that will explore works by major European
and American artists in the first half of the 20th century.
April may not bring showers to the Treasure Coast, but
it will definitely bring artists from around the state to Fort
Pierce for the “En Plein Air Paint Out Souvenirs of Downtown,”
an annual event hosted by Main Street Fort Pierce,
Inc., scheduled for April 18, 19 and 20. >>
