DC, he created new paintings such as “Westwood Road
Nocturne” (2006) that had ecological overtones. Nakashima
resists interpreting his work from any single perspective, preferring
that they be seen as metaphors for complex interconnected
relationships.
STEPHEN KNAPP: LIGHTPAINTINGS, Feb. 18 –
June 3, 2012, Stark Gallery
Stephen Knapp’s lightpaintings
will be created on
the gallery’s wall surface
with varied hues of light
passing through a series of
irregular panels of colored
glass. The effect in a
darkened gallery is simply
spectacular, reminiscent
of the overlapping translucent
color washes in the
work of color-field painters
such as Morris Louis and
Helen Frankenthaler. From
a distance, each lightpainting
seems to emerge out
of deep space, with the
darkened wall disappearing
beneath the pattern of light and shadow. Knapp began
developing his current series of wall-based lightpaintings in
2002, and since then, has introduced the concept to audiences
around the country. One of Knapp’s lightpainting installations
is on display in the lobby of Riverside Theatre.
