A SEASON OF CELEBRATION
FIVE ELVES OF INTEREST
61
gypsies in desperate need of medical care.
On his last trip to Romania, D’Errico brought a half-million
dollars worth of donated medicine. He gave the gypsies
literally everything but the clothes on his back, returning
with an empty suitcase. He performed 15 foot surgeries in 11
days, and visited five orphanages with some people walking
from 10 miles away. In past years, D’Errico has mailed medicine
to the village, where Kids N Crisis has built a school.
He has treated a man’s gangrene wound by viewing it on
the Internet and prescribing care. On D’Errico’s last trip, the
man recognized him from a photo and came up and kissed
him. A woman’s life was saved from an acute tooth abscess,
although D’Errico, a podiatrist, can’t perform dental or
internal surgery.
“I did what I could from my realm,” D’Errico says. “The
first time I went was in 1998. And the kids remembered me
12 years later. There is so much need. We are going to set
up an operating room. The vets knew we needed shoes and
we brought over 75 pairs. One village had an outbreak of
pinworm, and we had enough medicine to cure everyone. It
was a life-changing event for them and me.”
Despite all his charitable efforts, D’Errico doesn’t believe
he does enough for what he receives in return. “Much has
been given to me,” he says. “I want to give from my parents about giving. That’s all Elves
back. I learned
they did. I had so
many brothers and sisters because they lived with us for a
couple of days, weeks or months. What I get back is far more
than what I give. I get to travel around the world and donate
my services and skills.”
It may seem that D’Errico leads a great life today, but four
years ago he was in a dark place.
“I was in a bad way mentally, physically and spiritually,”
he says. “I thought I was dying. I had a thyroid problem and
almost had kidney and liver failure. What kept me going
was my office. We pray for everyone here. If you don’t feel
the love here, we aren’t doing our jobs. I was given a second
chance and I don’t want to blow it,” he says.
“A lot of doctors donate time and money, but he is everywhere
for us,” says Honor Flight director Roberts. “He
shows up to help pour beer at the Pirate Fest. He shows up
to help us decorate our (Veterans Day Parade) float. I can
always count on him.”
Scores of Romanian gypsies would agree.

What most people don’t know about me: “I’m really shy
underneath. I am really a shy person and I love gardening.”
Favorite holiday memory: “When I was 12 years old I got
a pinball machine. It’s between that and cutting down our
Christmas tree. It was very special then, and now my dad is
in a nursing home and that makes it special.”
