the east end and graduated from the west end,’’ said Dr. William
R. Dannahower, former mayor of Fort Pierce, who attended the
school from 1933 to 1945. He fondly remembers his years on the
football team and his close-knit graduating class. “There were only
about 52 students in my class,” he said. “It was still the war when I
graduated, so everyone was either signing up or getting drafted.”
Sally Richeson is just one of four generations in her family who
has attended the school. The tradition began with her dad, Joe
Yates, who, for an Eagle Scout project planted oak trees on the
school grounds that still stand today. Her daughter, Lillah Cruce,
also attended the school and her granddaughter, Sarah Cruce,
attends it today as a seventh-grader.
