Richeson, a member of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation,
is especially concerned about the future of the vacant
west wing. She hopes it can be restored and used to expand
the Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts into a high school.
“Here we have this absolutely wonderful building and I
think it needs to be used to extend the scope of the magnet
school of the arts so that children can complete their entire
school education on one campus..’’
No estimates on the restoration or possible use as a school
were available. “I just want every single person who has
worked there, taught there, or learned there to know what’s
happening, “ said Richeson, “I want to build a strong foundation
for the school.” She said strong community support
could help qualify the project for a grant through the Florida
Division of Historical Resources. Under this division, the
special grant category awards funds to a limited number of
historical restoration projects throughout the state. The total
amount for this year’s list was just more than $7.3 million,
split between 28 projects.
Today, the school is home
to the Fort Pierce Magnet
School of the Arts.
