what they wanted from the Indian River, the ocean and
the land.”
Now, in the 21st century, numerous members of the family
operate small businesses in the area. Peggy Summerlin
Allen, Herman’s daughter, learned how to filet fish when she
was a child, and worked in the fishing business for 10 years.
Now, she owns a hair salon, Riverview Hair Design, in North
Bridge Plaza. It’s just a mile or so from where her greatgrandparents
settled. She and her family live on the same
property in the St. Lucie Village area. The original homestead
home is gone.
Before the Summerlins’ 2007 reunion, organizers got the
word out to relatives the old-fashioned way, by laboriously addressing
the invitations by hand and sending them out by mail.
This time, they relied on Facebook, and created a Facebook private
group in which more than 100 family members continue to
keep in touch by exchanging photos and memories.
The reunion committee included Allen, Polly Ann Summerlin
Moore, Lucy and Mel Folbrecht, Larry and Pam Summerlin
and Dale Summerlin van der Lugt. The next reunion is
expected to take place in 2018.
