you get than sur ng;” said Andy Brady, -3, membership
consultant at the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce. “I ust
like the lifestyle, the travel. Going on a surf trip is a whole
other deal. 8ou end up in Third World locations with
different cultures.”
All these surfers have been on surf safaris to Costa Rica
and other exotic locations, including Australia, Hawaii,
Bahamas, Panama, Puerto Rico, and ,exico. Each man has
a different tale to tell of that one perfect, huge wave.
“About 13 years ago it was a 12-1- foot swell at Puerto
Escondido, the ,exican Pipeline,’’ said Rissacher. “I caught
the perfect wave and I survived. I remember it well. Thirty
seconds of eternity.’’
Brady remembers paddling out in six-foot surf at Cape
Hatteras, N.C., and seeing another surfer silhouetted against
the rising sun. “The water was crystal clear back then and it
was beautiful.”
Although he remembers big days in Hawaii, %avis recalls
a session at a river mouth in Costa Rica as his favorite. “Five
of us were there. It was three days of clean waves, paradise
and ust us.’’
But Benton’s best memories are local. “Sur ng at the trestle
off the nuclear power plant in the +?0s was the best wave in
Florida,” he recalled. “It was a point break that went all the
way to the beach. I remember thinking, How can this be
Florida; I also remember some 12-1--foot faces down on
Reef Road in Palm Beach.”
Thiess recalls two weeks in Hawaii, but the one day that
stands out he didn’t surf. “We were on the North Shore @of
OahuB and we had paddled out in some pretty big surf.
There was a -0-foot swell and guys were being towed in by
Jet Ski. It was the only day we didn’t surf. It was a little bit
over my head. I’ve no problem with sitting that one out.”
For Barnes, the big one came the rst time he went to
Costa Rica after 10 years of raising kids and no sur ng. “I
had no business being there. It was 10-12 foot. It was almost
spiritual. I remember feeling like I was 18 again.”
It’s easy to imagine that these guys have had near-death
experiences over the years. Their stories will give you an
idea of how powerful mother ocean can be.
“I fell on a point break wave at the ,exican pipeline and I
rode the wave underwater all the way to the beach,’’
Rissacher said. “And I was very happy to see the beach
when I nally came up.’’
