COVER STORY
115
The Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series in 1955 and this billboard,
at top, in Vero Beach proudly proclaimed it. Above, neatly trimmed
hedge rows and this sign welcome fans to Dodgertown.
tradition dates back to former Dodger owner Walter
O’Malley, who established Dodgertown. He wanted the
players to be in full view of the fans.
This worked to the advantage of a young woman near
the Dodger dugout, who got shortstop Nomar Garciaperra
to sign her Garciaperra jersey minutes before a March 8
game against the Florida Marlins. “Oh, my God, Nomar
just signed my shirt,” the ecstatic woman shouted into her
cell phone.
The crowd, made up of families, retirees and sunburned
tourists, was good-natured and enthusiastic, particularly
when Garciaperra cracked a home run in the bottom of the
first. But only about 4,500 of the 6,500 seats were filled, a
common occurrence at most Dodger games these days.
And sometimes, especially when a winning Eastern or
Midwestern team is the opponent, those fans outnumber
those for the west coast Dodgers.
ARIZONA BOUND
The Dodgers figure to draw larger crowds in Arizona,
just a short flight from their vast Los Angeles fan base. The
club is the only West Coast team that still trains in Florida,
