LOOKING GOOD

to be able to see lobster underwater during lobster season; a
lady who searches for lost golf balls wanted to find them
faster; women say they can do a better job putting on their
makeup. Most simply want to rid themselves of their dependence
on eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Adam Faust, fifth-grade teacher at Citrus Elementary in
Vero Beach, wore glasses from the time he was 10 years old
until he was 40. In love with sports, he wanted to ditch
the glasses.
“I go surfing, I play golf, and I play soccer, and I needed
glasses for everything I did,” he said. “And I always broke
them. When I had Lasik done three years ago, it was a lifechanging
thing. It was painless, quick, and there were
immediate results. Dr. O’Brien set it up and then he worked
his magic.”
O’Brien said most people seek corrective surgery for functional
reasons rather than those of vanity. “It’s often a
lifestyle thing.
Glasses or contacts
may hinder their
lifestyle. Or, they
may be intolerant
of contacts. It’s
usually not so
much a vanity
issue as it is a functional
issue. They
want and need to
see better.”
Today people
from about age 21
to about age 70 can
have their vision surgically corrected. Those who need reading
glasses can opt for surgical monovision in which one
eye is corrected for close vision and the other is left alone
for distance vision. Later, surgery can improve the
distance vision.
Eye surgery has made tremendous strides in the last
two decades.
“I’m very excited,” said Kimberly Jay only 30 minutes
before Lasik. “I’m doing this to have the gift of vision again.
I want to be able to wake up and see the clock and to tend
to my children in the middle of the night.”
Wish fulfilled.

Before surgery, Kimberly needed glasses to see anything beyond the
length of her arm. As soon as her Lasik surgery was complete, she could
clearly see people in the room and even the pattern on the ceiling tiles.
