The springs are central to Florida’s identity. s 2u Jickers writes: “Nowhere is the
Sunshine State’s dreamlike quality more evident than in those green and blue springs.
They bubble to the surface from underground rivers, forming pools so clear and so
deep that boaters suffer vertigo, feeling as if they were suspended high in the air.”
The springs represent aboriginal Florida: even with their boats and theaters and souvenir
shops, the waters of Weeki Wachee, Silver
Springs, 8omosassa Springs and the others
still look like they have for centuries. William
Bartram, the naturalist who came through
Florida in the !th century, would recognize
them. Wakulla Springs and the Wakulla River
look as they did when 8ernando de Soto
came crashing through the forest in #"=.
Well, almost. From the beginning of the
spring in the long geological past to maybe )
years ago, it has been pure and clear and
clean. But now there are days when the crystalline
waters are clouded with algae. The
limpkin, that pretty tweezer-beaked bird
which was once the symbol of Wakulla, has
not been seen on the river since +))).
4echanical harvesters have to rip out the
hydrilla, an obno5ious water plant, and dump
weed-killer into springs to control it.
Wakulla’s problem is hardly unique: Florida
is growing at a crazy pace, building houses,
shopping centers, resorts–whole new towns.
Tallahassee’s galloping development means
that the city wastewater plant spews out +)
million gallons of ef9uent a day.
he osprey is Aust one of many forms of wildlife that can e seen at Wakulla Springs.
