but with a trend now toward adding luxury to the basic
sportfisherman and motor yacht designs.
For the most part, DeMatteo said, men are interested in
the exterior and engine configuration of a boat, and women
influence the interior design. DeMatteo recalls a client who
wanted a design for a production boat to be manufactured
in Australia. It was to have a narrow beam with little concern
for the interior. “ ‘Where we come from, men make the
decisions,’ he told us. They built three boats and then the
company died. You have to take care of both sides.” One
special yacht designed by the company for a client was
probably the fanciest the Fexas designers have done to date.
“The couple had his and her cars on the boat; they wanted
to be able to go different places when they pulled into port.”
Of concern for boaters as well as the marine industry in
Florida is the trend toward selling marinas and other waterfront
land to developers for condominiums, eliminating
slips, docks and access to the water. “The average boater
with a 40-50-foot motor yacht or sportfisherman is finding it
harder and harder to keep their boats,’’ DeMatteo said.
DeMatteo tells of someone selling his 54-foot Hatteras
because he can no longer afford to dock it. “The industry is
very worried about it. Millions of dollars in business will be
lost if water access is lost.’’
