With a love for the outdoors and
all things natural, Ken and
Debbie Langley wanted to
build their new home without
harming the environment, especially
the Indian River Lagoon. Having lived
on the St. Lucie River in Port St. Lucie for many
years, the couple thought about downsizing on
a new waterfront location and started searching
for sites to build a smaller, more efficient home.
The Langleys looked at waterfront lots in
Port St. Lucie’s Ballantrae and Fort Pierce’s
Thumb Point, but none caught their fancy until
they found the perfect spot on Waters Drive in
St. Lucie Village. “We really wanted something
right on the water, and I particularly wanted
to have my boat right next to the house rather
than having to walk out a long dock,” says
Ken. Although the waterfront site had an older
home on it, the lot was ideal since it was on a
corner facing east toward the lagoon with a canal
just south of it where boats could be docked
next to the seawall.
Being sensitive to the environment, the
Langleys offered the site’s original home first
to the Smithsonian Marine Station and then to
Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. “We
were disappointed that they couldn’t take it,”
