The most popular Triton, the 3300, is featured on TV shows
such as the Discovery Channel’s Monster Squid: The Giant is
Real which aired Jan. 27. The three scientists aboard, including
bioluminescence expert Edie Widder, founder of Ocean Research
Conservation Association in Fort Pierce (better known
as ORCA), each had their own experimental method of luring
the legendary monster of the deep, which can grow as large
as 40 feet, off the coast of Japan. Videos of the expedition are
available on the Discovery Channel web site.
At least three more shows featuring a Triton are expected
over the coming months, Deppe says.
Caseltine practically jumps for joy each time a Triton shows
up on a television or computer screen.
“It promotes Vero Beach,” she says. “It shows that we’re
business friendly, that we welcome and encourage businesses.
And it’s seen worldwide.”
Tritons, with their 360-degree view from inside the spherical
passenger compartment, are favored by filmmakers and researchers.
The company’s next sub will be capable of diving to
36,000 feet — about 6 miles — to the deepest of ocean depths.
With a price tag of more than $17 million, according to documents
supplied to the county commission, Triton expects to
sell it to film and research companies or to individuals whose
income lets them spend that much for an adventure.
The acrylic sphere passenger compartment on the Triton
3300/3 is the largest and thickest ever manufactured for
submersibles, Deppe says. The Triton 36000, when built, will
have a glass sphere from high-pressure glassmaker Rayotek
Scientific, built to withstand the tremendous pressures 6
miles beneath the surface.
