Paul Miller of Stuart paddles a sit-on-top kayak, which is popular because it is easy to get in and out of and can serve as a floatation device if it rolls over.
the IRL, and for good reason. A kayak, especially the popular
sit-on-top, is the most accessible craft on the water, Stout explains.
It is stable, easy to use and does not get blown around
by the wind like canoes do. “Kayaks have always outsold
canoes by huge margins. I usually sell two to three canoes a
year versus 200 or more kayaks in the same time.”
McBride notes that canoes were fairly popular at one point,
“but kayaks long ago surpassed canoe sales in this area. Most
kayaks are designed for one paddler, while canoes generally
require two, especially if (they’re) inexperienced. Kayaks are
also much more impervious to the wind due to their lower
profile, as well as being easier to haul and store. The learning
curve to using a kayak is also much shorter; roll over in a
canoe, and it fills with water. Do the same thing with a selfbailing
sit-on-top kayak, and you have a big flotation device.
Climb back on and continue your journey.””
