CLOD, but they know another member when they see one.
“Most of them come in pairs because it usually takes two
people to crew a boat,” Reynolds said.
“The best part,” according to Varoujan “Pops” Karentz,
“is that there are no rules or a board of directors.” Member
Ann Catchick has an idea why the group has no administrators:
“That’s because there are way too many captains in this
group to have a boss,” she said.
Pope has the aura of president since he began the local
group in 2003, but his is a friendly social role. He and his
wife, Chris, spend a significant amount of time organizing
CLOD events and keeping the e-mail list updated, but Pope
is chairman/director of the Youth Sailing Foundation so his
plate is full enough.
Even though there is no official organization, members of
the group have an extensive network of events they attend
together or share with friends who are still cruising and may
be passing through the area.
The group gets together for pot lucks, cocktail parties or
assisting other boaters around town and even organized a
float in the Oceanside Christmas Parade for several years.
Each Wednesday morning CLODs meet at the 2002 Restau–
rant to “swap lies” during breakfast, and everyone is
heartily welcomed.
A board on the wall invites boaters who are just passing
through at the marina to list their first names, the boat they
are captaining and their home berth.
“I don’t know the last names of cruisers I have known for
years,” said Bob Logcher (Bob and Chesley on the Sygnet.)
“We usually know the name of their boat, though, and that
serves as identification.”
People usually get to know about their events through
word of mouth, which was how they became a CLOD
Community in the first place.
“We had cruising friends who always talked about Vero
Beach,” Reynolds said. “We came down from Connecticut >>
