1,000 feet carrying one passenger and a pilot. The second
model, which proved to be more popular than the first, can
take as many as three people to depths of 3,300 feet. The cost?
Between $2 million and $3 million or a little more, depending
on options chosen.
So what’s the attraction of these recreational vehicles,
which are technically “submersibles” rather than submarines
because they can’t generate their own power?
They can take passengers down to see sights that no
human has ever seen, and they can do it anywhere in the
world, Deppe says. And Triton can also supply a support
ship and personnel.
Triton’s home base is in a modest metal building off Route
60 near Interstate 95, typical of those warehouses found in
