masted, flat-bottomed, blunt-bowed cargo carrier, one that
plied the waters from Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts
to Maine. Her hold was usually filled from stem to
stern with lumber.
Lily was sail-powered — she still has no engine — so the
price of fuel didn’t matter, and with her flat bottom she
could traverse shallow bays and rivers where her deepkeeled
counterparts dared not venture. She was built with
a single mast, but the transformation from cargo carrier to
passenger yacht included the addition of a second mast. She

morning, afternoon, and evening.
